From Vancouver to
& Chicago

Days 1, 2 & 3 of our trip

Mobirise
360 of room

The train was on time and we went aboard to our room. No Dining car yet so we got a cold sandwich and a salad, then off we to the Observation car to watch the Columbia River Gorge go by. It got dark a little after Arlington, so we go back to the room and made up our beds. Larry tried the upper bunk but it was way too hot up there. The conducter said he was about to kick the air conditioner into high gear for a bit, as he does everynight just before bedtime. That helped but we both slept on the bottom bed. Or at least tried to sleep. We didn't get much that first night, not used to the bouncing and the noise.
We arose at West Glacier, Montana and made our way to the dining car we picked up in Spokane for breakfast. When you ride in a sleeper car you get your meals for free along with the room, but the tables are for four so they always seat another couple with you. We sat with a couple that were from Peoria, Illinois and were returning home. After breakfast we sat in the observation car and watched the world go by. When it was lunch time it was back to the dining car and this time we ate with a couple from Ireland. They had been visiting some friends on Whidby Island and were heading to New York next. We then spent some more time in the Observation car and some in our room. The Observation car was usually cooler than our room and was all windows so it was easier to see all around. In the one end was tables and the other was chairs facing the windows, and the snack bar is downstairs. Depending on where you were it could empty, partially full or completely full. When dinner came around we had a table with two singles, a young gentleman from Japan and a lady that had once lived in Vancouver. Back to the Observation car until dark crossing from Montana to North Dakota just a little before dark. We went to our room and waited to get to Minot where everyone can get off the train for a bit. This time we had over an hour. Then off to bed. We slept a little better this time, but still woke up alot as the train rolled over so rough track.

We got up at St Cloud, Minnesota. This Morning we breakfasted with an older woman who was traveling with her daughter from Wilsonville. The woman's father had always wanted to make that train trip so they decided to do it in his honor on what would have been his 100th birthday. From Chicago they were renting a car and driving a meandering trip back to see things and visit friends and relatives. Back to our room, the observation car was full. When lunch time came it was back to the dining car. Did I mention that our sleeper car was the last car in the train, and we were towards the rear of the car, and the dining car was up front. We had to pass through the front of our car, a coach car, another coach car, the observation car, another coach car, and one more coach car, to get to the dining car. All on a moving train. We got our exercise. Any way at lunch we ended up with the same two ladies from breakfast. They told us of some of their travels, they have been around a lot. We finished up as we were leaving St Paul. We sat in our room and watched as the Mississippi River went by outside. We packed our stuff up and got ready to get off. We passed Milwaukie on time but got slowed down coming into Chicago and arrived 30 minutes late. We made our way out of the station and walked 3 1/2 blocks East to our hotel, crossing over the Chicago River and pass the Willis (Sears) Tower on the way. Got checked in put the bags in the room, then headed down to the bar for something to eat and drink. The two ladies we had Breakfast and lunch with on the train were at the same hotel and said hello as they passed heading out for a pizza parlor. After we ate we went out for a stroll up to the river and snapped some pictures and wandered back to the hotel and our room. Boy did we sleep good tonight.

After a good night's sleep, we pack up and wander back to the train station. Find our tour group and check in and give them our luggage. We had time before the train so we go up to the food court and grab some thing to eat. After we ate we wandered back to the Great Hall and waited with the rest of our group.

Our trip starts

The train we were leaving on was late getting in so of course we were late leaving, but we got on the train and rode back up to Milwaukie (place looked familar) and then it was off the train and onto a bus. we then rode the bus from Milwaukie to Sturgeon Bay with a rest stop in between. When we got here they gave us the keys to our room and said our luggage would be there shortly, which it was. Dinner tonight was our choice and we chose the Chinese Buffet. It was mostly pretty good, some things were different than what we are used to, but we found plenty to eat. Back to the room to relax. Guess it's time to start writing this blog.

Today we are taking a tour around Door County, which is the whole peninsula above Sturgeon Bay. With 200 miles of shoreline they have the most beaches of any county in the US. We picked up a local guide that told us about the places we were seeing. First we went through Carlsville so named because there were so many Carls living there. Next was Egg Harbor, which got it's name when two ships tried to enter the harbor at the same time and neither down wanted to back down, so they started throwing their cargo which was eggs at each other. Then it was on up to Peninsula Park and the Eagle Bluff lighthouse where we heard about the history of the light and it's keepers and took a tour of the keepers house. Back to Fish Creek for a little shopping then on to Sister Bay where we had lunch at AL Johnson's Swedish restaurant. We were served swedish pancakes and swedish meatballs and Ligonberries to put on them (the pancakes not the meatballs) with ice cream and a cookie for dessert. But the main attraction to Al's is the sod roof with the goats up there. After lunch we visited Seaquist Orchards to learn about growing cherries and apples here. A little time in the gift shop then on the road again. Headed down to Cave Point county park for a little sightseeing and over to Whitefish Dunes state park to see parts of a ship wreck and a sandy beach with a chance to dip your toes in Lake Michighan. We then went back to Sturgeon Bay and after a quick stop at the motel we were off to Waterfront Mary's for a fish boil. That's where they put fish , onions, potatoes and carrots in a basket and then put it a boiling pot of water over a wood fire, then pour some accelerant on it and flash boil the whole thing, then serve it with melted butter, then cherry pie ala mode for dessert. It's back to the hotel and another day in the books.

This morning we put our luggage out, have breakfast then load the bus to head north. It is mainly travel time today so they pop in a movie, "Somewhere in Time", which was filmed at the Grand Hotel on Makinac Island.

Sault Ste Marie

To Canada and back and the Soo Locks

We have a rest stop in Marinette, where they had just christaned a new Navy ship, then it was on to Escanaba where we had a lunch of Pasties. We had had one when we came through here in the seventies and I like them. From there it was a short ride to the border and into Canada. No sweat crossing the border and it's on to the hotel. Baggage is delivered and we settle in, and I start trying to catch up with this thing.

Again it is put the luggage out, have breakfast then load the bus. We cross the international bridge and come back to the states and over to the Soo Locks Tour. We are there at 9:00 for the 10:00 tour. While we are waiting 2 more buses show up, then they load a boat with those guys and any singles that show up and take off at 10, and there we sit. Turns out there is another bus that is supposed to be on the boat with us but they had a medical emergency and are late. Our tour director asks if we can go ahead and board so we don't have to fight them for what seats we want and they let us. So we sit onboard the boat and wait. They finally show up and get on the boat and off we go. Head up river and they point out the CG icebreakers, the shipyard, hydro plant and other stuff. The Capt then says that the american locks are busy so we will have to wait a while, but he is heading over to the canadian locks to use them. So they point out stuff on the Canadian side of the river and we watch a freighter come in to get locked up. Now the Capt informs us that the canadian locks are broken and we have to go back to the american side. So back we go and enter our lock just as the freighter is entering the one next to it. We are next to the viewing tower so we get to watch the tourists watch us get locked through. On the upper side we sailed over to see the steel mill on the canadian side, but their locks were still locked up so back we go to the american side and lock back down. By the time we got back we were almost a half hour late and the tour director was worried about missing the ferry so we loaded up the bus and took off for Mackinac City, crossing the Mackinac bridge on the way ( these spellings are pronounced "Mackinaw").

Mackinac Island

The Island and the Grand Hotel

We made it with time to spare, in fact our luggage went out on the first ferry and we were on the second one. Another nice boat ride out to Mackinac Island, where we boarded horse drawn carriges to take us to the Grand Hotel. Cars are not allowed on the island and you get around by horses, carriges, or a bicycle. A little orientation at the hotel then we are given our room keys (which are real keys). To the room where we rest a minute and then dress for dinner, which is semi-formal, then go stand in line to get in to the dining room. The line moved pretty fast so we didn't have to wait long. Our table was at the other end of the restaurant, about 200 feet away. after dinner it was back to the room and work on this.

Oh goody, we get to sleep in today. Breakfast went to 9:30 and we didn't have to meet our group until 10:00. At that time we loaded up in a buggy and rode through town and around the island. They took us up to a place where we switched to a bigger buggy and saw more things then back to the place to get back on the smaller buggies and then we had the choice to go back to town or the hotel. We chose the hotel. On the ride we saw the Fort (both of them), the stables for the horses, Skull cave, downtown, the Governor's summer home. the scout house and other things. Back at the hotel we wandered around looking at things and sat on the front porch. Found a place that served really good Aioli Fries and that came in a huge bowl. Went back to the room for a bit then headed up to the Cupola Bar, which is perched above the hotel and gives you quite the view of the harbor, the strait and the bridge. We decided that after the fries we weren't hungary enough for dinner, but figured it would be fun to go down and watch the other people in full dress up go in. One of the couples (that are from Lyden) saw us and came over and chatted with us for a bit, then went in to eat at which time we went back out to the porch and watched the sunset. Back to the room to pack and get things ready for tomorrow.

Got up, finished packing and put the bags out, then headed down to breakfast. Another good meal, then we all met in the parlor for a group photo. On to a carriage to ride down to the ferry boat. It is foggy this morning so everyone is trying to sit inside. We were the last to load so not much space inside. I just headed up to the top deck and found a seat. Pretty soon Kathy was joining me saying it was too crowded in side. Not too bad a ride in, the wind was at our back so it wasn't too windy.

Traverse City

Contining our trip through Michighan

Back on land we board the bus and head out. Next stop was Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen. They had all kinds of fudge, ice cream, chocolate, and assorted candy. I gained 10 pounds walking in the door, but the free taste they gave us was enough for me. Then it was on to Petoskey, famous for their rocks. We didn't get any, but had a real nice lunch that was so big we each took half of it with us to have for dinner. We noticed lots of others doing the same. On to Charlevoix where we took on another guide to show us the Mushroom houses, so named becuse of the shope of the roofs. Then it was on to Traverse City and the hotel. We were right on the shoreline and had a balcony overlooking the beach, where we sat and had our leftovers.

After Breakfast we load the bus. Today we are going to Sleeping Bear Dunes. First stop is the Philip A. Hart visitors center where we watch a movie about the park and how it got it's name. We then drove around Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive with a couple of stops at viewpoints and where we could climb the dunes for a view. On into Glen Arbor for lunch. We were going to buy snacks at the grocery store, but there was a guy out front selling hot dogs and bratwurst, so Kathy had a hot dog and I had a cherry brat. It was pretty good. Then it was on to Moomer's Ice Cream, where we each got a scoop. Back to the hotel for a minute and it was off to the Boathouse for dinner. Kind of a fancy place but the food was very good. And we got to watch a wedding get rained out.

Bag pull at 8:00, Breakfast and on the bus by 9:00. Long ride this morning, 2 hours.

Dearborn Michighan

The Ford museum and F-150 factory tour

Mt. Pleasant for lunch. We found a coffe shop and shared a sandwich, which was fine after we scrapped the weird stuff off. Another hour on the bus and it was the Steam Railroad Institute in Owosso. That was pretty interesting and we had a very good guide. Then another hour and a half ride to the hotel. We had dinner in the fancy restaurant in the lobby. Kathy had french fries and I had a burger and a beer. We do have a nice room that overlooks the Ford International Headquarters, and we can see Detroit and the Internatioal Bridge to Canada.

We have breakfast in the fancy restaurant in the lobby and get on the bus for the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Short ride and it's inside the museum. Lots of stuff to see, too much to try and describe here. We roamed around in there for quite a while then over to the village where we took a horse and buggy ride over to where we had lunch, then took another around the park. We then took a third one back up to the exit. Lots of stuff there too. You can ride Model T's around the place or a train or just walk. Tonight is our last dinner with the group and we will be leaving shortly. We had dinner at Henry's Garage, which was a unique kind of place with gas pump handles on the doors and what have you. The buffet diner was pretty good, and we celebrated 2 birthdays in the group. One was 74 and the other one just turned 90. Back to the hotel and we don't have to pack for the baggage pull in the morning.

Today after breakfast we loaded up and headed to the factory tour at the Ford plant. They were working on the road so we had to take a little detour but we got there. We had a real nice tour of the plant , but pictures aren't allowed so you'll have to take our word on that. It was real interesting. Then we dropped people off at the airport, and the Detroit train station and then the driver brought us and another couple back here to the hotel. We had a nice dinner in the restaurant in the lobby, arranged for a ride to the train station in the morning, then went up to pack for going home.

Up early to finish packing and get to the train station. We go to the lobby and find the driver that is taking us to the station. A short 5 minute ride and we are there, 10 minutes before it opens. It opened and we went in and found out where to go and waited for the train. It was on time and we got on and found our seats.

Back to Chicago and home

It was a nice ride to Chicago, the tracks were smooth and the train did about 110 mph. We were just whipping along. Got to Chicago and dropped our bags in the Amtrak lounge, had a drink and a snack, then went out and got a cab. We went to go see "The Bean" or Cloudgate as it is called. There was a lot of construction going on around there and we couldn't get too close, but we could see it and got some pictures. Then Kathy hailed us a cab and it was back to the train station where we got something to eat and sat out by the river to eat it. Back to the lounge and relax until the time to get on the train. They finally start boarding and we head to our car, which is clear at the other end of the train (why couldn't they have backed in?). After a quarter mile walk we get there and get on and find our room. They said we could have dinner in our room, which sounded good to us after walking all that way to get on the train. After dinner we watch the world go by and relax, then settle in and go to bed. Sleeping wasn't any better this time than when we came out. A lot ot of jerking and swaying. It was worse than sleeping on a dredge.

The rest of the trip home was the same. We would make the quarter mile hike to the dining car for breakfast and lunch, and eat dinner in our room. This time it was a lot cooler in our room and the observation car was always packed so we spent a lot of time in our room, watching the scenery, playing cards and napping. Another night with little sleep while they switched cars in Spokane, then spend the morning riding along the gorge to Vancouver. And thus our trip as ended, now for a good night's sleep.

And as our trip ends we say good bye to the Mid-West

Bye Bye
